When you are a Louisville KY Twins Newborn Photographer, you get to photograph families from all over the metro area.  It seems like I get more and more clients traveling to come for their newborn sessions.  Recently I had the pleasure of working with these adorable twin girls, Lizzy and Evie.  Lizzy was an entire pound heavier than Evie and boy does it show when they are side by side.  I couldn’t get over how much one little pound made that much of a difference in size!  Check them out side by side.

I was really excited for this session.  Not only because I had just gotten back from the mentoring session at Dewdrops Photography, but because I had set up a new shoot space for newborns aside from my regular studio.  It was equipped with a new floor drop as well!  I really love how it turned out!

I think you can really see the difference in how much bigger Lizzy was in this shot!  Look how sweet her little smile is!! I know these two are going to grow up to be the best of friends.  See how big sis is already protective of little Evie? 🙂

Not only did I add a new floor, but I also threw on a new color for the walls and quite liked how the parent shots turned out against this color.  Creamy and dreamy!

These sweet babies are safe in daddy’s hands.  It’s hard to pick a favorite from this session, but I think this one might be it for me.  I am in love with the moodiness and simplicity of it this photo.  What’s your take on it?

Just a little reminder that it is imperative to book your newborn session while you’re still pregnant to ensure your spot on the schedule.  Newborn sessions are done in the first 2 weeks of life and if you wait until the baby is born to contact me about booking, then I may not have the ability to fit you in.  We all know that having a baby (or two) is a life changing event and is one of the most happiest times in your life.  I am honored to be a part of each and every one of them and would love to be a part of yours too!  Newborns are my passion!

Brenden - What a darling twin newborn session. I think its so amazing when one twin is bigger than the other like Lizzy was. Twins have such a special and amazing bond and I think you really captured how that starts even when they are tiny babies- the best of friends from the beginning. Also your new Louisville shoot space looks like it worked out great!ReplyCancel

tccba - This is a gorgeous twin newborn session! I can see why KY families travel to you! It is hard enough to photograph a single newborn baby, but two at the same time can be near impossible at times. They look so peaceful in these portraits. And the first family photos…perfection!ReplyCancel

As you know from previous blog posts, I have been a longtime fan of Rachel Vanoven.  I have been following her since 2013, which is when I started my newborn photography journey, and have been blessed with learning from her e-workshops and in person mentoring in August 2014. I felt like I learned so much at the hands-on mentoring session and saw immediate results.  I think it is always fun to go back and see where you started to appreciate just how far you have come.

I wanted to share my newborn photography past and present with you. This “before” photo is in a world all on its own and is what prompted me to really learn the art of professional newborn photography.  This photo is what I’d like to refer to as a result of hiring an untrained non-newborn photographer, such as myself at the time.  I had no clue how to pose a baby and got all of my setup ideas from Pinterest.  (All of you newborn photogs out there just cringed, didn’t you?)  I also didn’t have a clue on how to edit newborn skin or even shoot with a pro digital camera.  Heck, I wasn’t even shooting in RAW!  I had so much to learn!  It’s a fact that unless you are hiring a newborn professional for your baby’s photos, then it is very likely your photographer could produce something along these lines in the photo below simply because they just don’t know better and haven’t been trained properly in this skill.  I can confidently say that I was extremely embarrassed for myself and my client with the product I was delivering in this photo.

This was taken in may 2013 prior to any newborn training.

“BEFORE”  This was taken in May 2013 prior to any newborn training.

Fast forward through a year’s worth of practice and training through the online workshop.  I was feeling more confident in my posing, but still was missing something, so I went to Rachel’s in-person mentoring workshop.  The results from those 2 days were really gratifying for me as I stated in my previous blog post.

SEPT 2014 | Post In-Person Mentoring workshop with Rachel Vanoven.

I continued to get comfortable with all of the new skills from the workshop and honing in on my craft.  However, there was still something that always evaded me.  You see, Rachel shot only natural light at the time and I operate with strobes for all of my studio sessions.  I was achieving the end results that I wanted to see in photos, but it was taking forever to do this is post.  I could spend countless hours editing a session to perfection before I sent it off to  a client.  I just couldn’t get my lighting perfect in camera and it was costing me time away from family and a lot of precious sleep!  A few examples below from a session in April 2015:

APRIL 2015 – My progress throughout the following year after attending Rachel Vanoven’s in person mentoring workshop.

Fast forward yet again to June 2015.  The crème de la crème of studio light newborn photographers opened up a mentoring spot for me and I pounced on the opportunity.  I cannot express the amount of “ah ha” moments that I had when I attended the workshop at Dewdrops Photography.  Amy is a lighting magician!  Below are a few shots from the mentoring session and every setup required very minimal editing due to nailing the light properly in camera.

June 2015 – Mentoring session at Dewdrops Photography. Posed and styled by Amy McDaniel. Shot and edited by myself.

The following week after I got home from the mentoring with Dewdrops Photography, a set of twin girls that were on my schedule decided to make their entrance into the world a little early.  I felt like I really cut down a lot on my editing time in post after this session and am excited to continue developing my new lighting skills.  Below is just a teaser from the twins session.  More will come in the next blog post to show off these two little beauties!

Louisville KY Newborn Photographer | Jennifer Rittenberry Photography | www.jlritt.com

Long story short, I am always looking for new ways to add skills to my newborn repertoire.  The more that I learn, the more that I can give that knowledge back to my clients in the form of art.  Nothing excites me more than to hear the gasps of excitement when new moms and dads see their gallery for the first time, or to see the comments posted on the photos of their new baby from ecstatic friends and family fawning over their child.  I hope this recap of my history and progress on how I got from that awful “before” photo to this most recent session has actually helped someone.  Whether that be a respective client trying to narrow down the huge field of photographers out there and settling on the perfect one, or if it’s a fellow photographer trying to take their artistry to the next level.  We all start somewhere and there is a photographer out there for everyone.  I just hope that I can be a part of your journey in some small way; photographing your baby or cheering on my tog peeps  <3

I cherish each and every little baby that comes into my studio and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one.  Bring them all to me!  And send your pregnant friends my way, too!  Tell them to BOOK WHILE YOU’RE STILL PREGNANT!  Another blog post coming on that soon!

Because I am a Louisville KY Newborn Photographer, I got the chance to meet Harper!  She is nearly famous now after making into the JRP record books…for most stubborn newborn ever! 🙂  You can’t tell from her all of her perfectly dreamy images below, but she made me WORK for every single shot.  She refused to sleep and her session lasted 8.5 hours, yes, eight and a half hours!  I will say though in her defense, her mommy traveled almost 2 hours to come see me and Harper was 3 weeks old at her session, so she already had 2 big strikes against her for being sleepy.  I guess we’ll let her slide.  After all, her gallery turned out gorgeous and mom is thrilled!  That’s why I love this job.  The looks I get from new mommies every time they get to sneak a peek at the back of my camera during the session is just so rewarding for me.  I can’t wait to see which images she prints for her walls.  Which one is your favorite?

I can’t think of anything more exciting than being a Louisville KY Newborn Photographer!  I absolutely loved everything about this family & their session.  Baby Michael slept like a dream, even though he started out with quite a rocky start. Hehe!

Each session begins with mom / dad following my pre-session prep guide and then feeding baby upon arrival.  Once baby is “milk drunk,” then we get started.  This particular afternoon we mixed up my usual workflow & started with family and sibling shots first. It’s actually my favorite part of the session so we dove right in.  I like to push these shots to the front of the session when dealing with siblings to make sure they have their fresh smiles ready for me!  However, Michael had other ideas in mind.  Explosions out of both ends (a few times, I might add, lol) caused quite a ruckus in the studio! Once everything was cleaned up, he went right to sleep and you’d never know he’d had an upset stomach!  I don’t think he made a peep the entire rest of his session.

Big sister is smitten already!

Next up was the bean bag.  It’s funny to think about it now, but I used to shy away from ALL bean bag posing.  Like, I hated it.  Mostly because I didn’t know what I was doing wrong and it seemed like I could never get the poses just right!  Practice, practice and a workshop with my mentor finally got me on the right path.  These are a few of my favorites from this session.

This is going to be an exciting year to be a Louisville KY Newborn Photographer!  My first newborn to kick off the New Year was sweet little Miss Madeline.  It’s hard to believe that just 2 short years ago I was photographing her big sister’s Senior photos.  I can only imagine the surprised faces when Mom and Dad found out they had this little angel on the way.  Nonetheless, her presence has reshaped this family in a wonderful way and you can see the love exuding from both mom and sister when they came to see me.

Louisville KY Newborn Photographer | Jennifer Rittenberry Photography | www.jlritt.com

Mother and her 2 lovely daughters

I always get the same couple of questions about posing: “Why do you twist the baby up like a pretzel?” or “Why do you pose them like that, it looks unnatural?”  Simple answers are “Because I can” and “Because they can only bend like this for a few short weeks out of the womb.”  Now, I want you to understand that I’m not being smug or arrogant when I say that.  I’m saying it because I have been properly trained in this skill and know how to pose the baby safely.  Not all babies can fold like a pretzel or do that highly sought after “froggy pose,” but it takes a trained professional such as myself to know how to execute it properly and to know when a baby just can’t do a pose.  You should never try to force a baby to do anything.  It’s also important to know that following my prep guide properly is also key, because without a deep sleeping baby, none of these poses would be possible.  All of my newborn clients are sent this prep info prior to their sessions (not available for purchase).

I love this series from her session with the soft pink tones and how well they compliment her skin.  I am a sucker for all things vintage / romantic or whimsical!  These dainty tiebacks from Luneberry and Dear Felicity, along with coordinating wraps from Dolly Priss and Itsy Bitsy Blooms (sparkle wrap) fit the bill .  Gorgeous lacey backdrop is from Rose and Ruffles.

Louisville KY Newborn Photographer | Jennifer Rittenberry Photography | www.jlritt.com

Poses shown from the top: Froggy, Timber, and bottom 3 are various angels of the Womb Pose.

In my Full Newborn Sessions, I include 2 backdrops for beanbag posing that the parents can give their input on color or leave it to photographer’s choice.  Here, I used another posing fabric from Roses and Ruffles, a purple lattice bonnet from Tanyas Tangles and a cream dainty knit bonnet from Emma Ruth Designs.

Louisville KY Newborn Photographer | Jennifer Rittenberry Photography | www.jlritt.com

After I finished up with the beanbag shots, we moved on to some prop shots and these are a handful of my favorites.  Purple wrap with matching bonnet is from Amos and Sawyer. Vintage floral crown can be found at The Birds Nest Props.

A few behind the scenes moments captured.  I just love how sweet and simple these are.  These would be the types of photos I would look back on and cherish if I were a new mom as well.

Nicola - Newborn safety is so important and I really like that you’ve taken the time to explain that you know how to pose babies safely. Newborn photography is a special skill and it’s essential to know how to handle little ones in their first days of life. It’s important for parents-to-be in Louisville to see that you not only create beautiful portraits, but that you are a responsible newborn photographer and take their babies’ care seriously. Great post!ReplyCancel
