Outdoor Family Session in Kentucky | McPherson Family | www.jlritt.com

The golden Summer nights and crisp Fall leaves in the Bluegrass State make it perfect timing for an Outdoor Family Session in Kentucky. I recommend booking these sessions several months in advance so you have time to plan your outfits and it will also ensure that you will have your spot on my calendar reserved. The closer we get to the optimal shooting times of the year, the less available slots there will be.

I’m really lucky to have scouted out this gorgeous 100 acre private horse farm that I’ve been given exclusive permission to shoot on and my clients LOVE it! Being as this is a private residence, details of the property are only given to booked clients and sent a few days prior to the session. Here are a few images from this Outdoor Family Session in Kentucky that was taken mid Fall. This will give you a good idea of what the foliage and sunsets look like at that time of year if you are thinking of a session in mid October.

Bhabhua A few things to take into consideration for an Outdoor Family Session in Kentucky in the Fall:

1. Sunset times are later at this time of year and you’ll want to lay your children down for their naps later in the day so they will not be cranky during your session. Session times will begin approximately one hour prior to sunset.

2. Remember that younger children tire faster so we will shoot all of your family images with them first and then a few individual shots of them before they are “done” with being a part of the session if they choose.

3. Making a family session fun is key, so bring your positive attitudes and focus of playing with your child in a loving way like you would at home for the best natural smiles. It’s important for them to follow directions to a certain degree for their own safety so they aren’t running around like heathens, but focusing too much of making them sit still or acting like “the perfect child” is probably not going to bode well for their attitude the rest of the session.

4. Relax and just enjoy being with your family. That’s really what this session is all about. I shoot alot of “in the moment” images and do very few “everyone looking at the camera” images unless it just happens naturally. My approach is more about capturing moments as they happen and can encourage genuine connections with activities that we’ll do during our session together.

5. Bribery isn’t totally out of the question, but it’s important to not make it the focus of the entire session and definitely do not bring the object of the bribery to the session. It will just encourage tantrums until they get said bribery object since it will attract all of their focus. However, bringing some of their favorite books or small stuffed animal to document into your family photos is a great idea to get some of their attention positively and it evokes a natural emotion when you can interact with them and these objects.
