Annlee’s first birthday rolled around in January and I had the honor of being her Mount Washington KY Cake Smash Photographer! Her mom and I discussed styling of the cake, decorations and wardrobe. We went with a creamy vanilla, light pink and gold theme. I had just the perfect little outfit for her to wear, too, from Sew Whimsey! The naked cake came from Sweet Stuff Bakery out of New Albany, IN and it was delicious! (Yes, I snuck a bite!)

If you’ve ever photographed a one year old during their cake smash, you probably know that they’re not too interested in the cake. It’s important to get some images of your subject prior to bringing out the cake. This will ensure that you’ll have some really cute photos before they get dirty or have a melt down. This age group only lasts about 15-20 minutes, and then it’s a crap shoot on how they will act the remainder of the session. lol!

A lot of one year old children haven’t had the luxury of eating cake before their first birthday rolls around, so it may leave them a little apprehensive on what to do with their cake! In order to get them to participate in their cake smash, sometimes I hide their favorite treats in the back of the cake so they will interact with it! Annlee did great with her cake, though, and no extra treats were needed! She liked her cake so much that she even got it into her hair! I had to get some closeups of her little curly ringlets covered in some icing along with the leftovers on her mouth.

After a cake smash, you’d expect that there is a mess to clean up! So, why not have a little splash in a vintage tub to clean up before your client goes home? We attempted this with Annlee, but as you can see below, she wasn’t really a fan! She ended up having a better time playing with the bubbles from outside of the tub! lol

Nicola - Look at those curls! What a sweetie! I love the delicate styling of Annlee’s cake smash photo session – the colours and details are so dainty and pretty. The tub photos following the smash are so good too. It’s funny how cute kids can be even mid-meltdown. I wish I looked so sweet while crying haha.ReplyCancel

Allison Anderson - Look at those curls on her head! What a cute little one year old girl. Your smash cake without all the icing is neat — a lot of children don’t like the feeling of buttercream icing on their fingers.ReplyCancel

It’s always fun meeting new clients and is one of the reasons why I love being a Louisville KY Baby Photographer.  I met Kinsley and her mother at her 9 month milestone session back in the Fall.  She has sass for days, a smile that puts sunshine to shame and the biggest brown eyes I’ve ever seen.  In one word, gorgeous. She came into the studio for her 1st birthday cake smash session, which was themed to the tune of Minnie Mouse.  Now, I don’t know where her mom tracked down all of these adorable Minnie Mouse props, but she gets a gold star for being the most prepared mother ever for a session!  She showed up with a whole suitcase full of themed accessories, no really, I’m.not.kidding… Minnie Mouse suitcase to boot!

I generally like to start my cake smash sessions off with the formal shots and cutesy prop shots and then on to the main event.  Here’s a little how our session flowed in order below…

You already know she gets whatever she wants with eyes like THESE… 3P9B1414

Then we moved on to some prop shots from my typical session styling:

I know, I know…on with the cake smash already, right?  Well, just about.  I make sure to snap several cute ones before the cake massacre begins!

All in all, I think she liked the cake!  Shooting on a Savage Backdrop here from B&H Photo.  They can be found at https://www.facebook.com/bhphoto.  These make for quick an easy cleanups after a messy cake smash.  Tear the piece off and throw it away!

Thanks for reading.  Stay tuned for my next blog post from my first set of TWINS!
