It’s so much fun being a Louisville KY Baby Photographer!  This little hunk is only 8 months old, believe it or not.  He’s a whopping 20+ lbs and is already cutting a mouthful of teeth and wearing 12 month clothing!  I don’t know how his mommy feels, but I can surely say that this tiny dude is trying to grow up way too fast.  He was even standing up during our session.  Be on the lookout, because this one is on the move!

As you can see, Raylan has so much personality already!  I cannot wait to see him back for his first birthday cake smash session; mom has a “mustache” theme picked out and already brainstorming on some ideas.  One thing is for sure, he will be donning a mustache like the baby did in The Addams Family.   Anyone remember his name?  Pubert Addams!  That’s your useless trivia for the day to go along with the blast from the past tv series.  Who knows what I’m talking about or am I just showing my age? hehe!!

Vintage Baby Mini Sessions are on the rise and in high demand.  BOOK NOW to claim your spot before I fill up.  I can tell you that I’m already 85% full from now until peak season in Fall, so please do us both a favor and get on my calendar before it’s too late.  Nothing pains me worse than having to turn away these sweet babies <3

This is going to be an exciting year to be a Louisville KY Newborn Photographer!  My first newborn to kick off the New Year was sweet little Miss Madeline.  It’s hard to believe that just 2 short years ago I was photographing her big sister’s Senior photos.  I can only imagine the surprised faces when Mom and Dad found out they had this little angel on the way.  Nonetheless, her presence has reshaped this family in a wonderful way and you can see the love exuding from both mom and sister when they came to see me.

Mother and her 2 lovely daughters

I always get the same couple of questions about posing: “Why do you twist the baby up like a pretzel?” or “Why do you pose them like that, it looks unnatural?”  Simple answers are Osterholz-Scharmbeck “Because I can” and “Because they can only bend like this for a few short weeks out of the womb.”  Now, I want you to understand that I’m not being smug or arrogant when I say that.  I’m saying it because I have been properly trained in this skill and know how to pose the baby safely.  Not all babies can fold like a pretzel or do that highly sought after “froggy pose,” but it takes a trained professional such as myself to know how to execute it properly and to know when a baby just can’t do a pose.  You should never try to force a baby to do anything.  It’s also important to know that following my prep guide properly is also key, because without a deep sleeping baby, none of these poses would be possible.  All of my newborn clients are sent this prep info prior to their sessions (not available for purchase).

I love this series from her session with the soft pink tones and how well they compliment her skin.  I am a sucker for all things vintage / romantic or whimsical!  These dainty tiebacks from Luneberry and Dear Felicity, along with coordinating wraps from Dolly Priss and Itsy Bitsy Blooms (sparkle wrap) fit the bill .  Gorgeous lacey backdrop is from Rose and Ruffles.

Louisville KY Newborn Photographer | Jennifer Rittenberry Photography | www.jlritt.com

Poses shown from the top: Froggy, Timber, and bottom 3 are various angels of the Womb Pose.

In my Full Newborn Sessions, I include 2 backdrops for beanbag posing that the parents can give their input on color or leave it to photographer’s choice.  Here, I used another posing fabric from Roses and Ruffles, a purple lattice bonnet from Tanyas Tangles and a cream dainty knit bonnet from Emma Ruth Designs.

Louisville KY Newborn Photographer | Jennifer Rittenberry Photography | www.jlritt.com

After I finished up with the beanbag shots, we moved on to some prop shots and these are a handful of my favorites.  Purple wrap with matching bonnet is from Amos and Sawyer. Vintage floral crown can be found at The Birds Nest Props.

A few behind the scenes moments captured.  I just love how sweet and simple these are.  These would be the types of photos I would look back on and cherish if I were a new mom as well.

Nicola - Newborn safety is so important and I really like that you’ve taken the time to explain that you know how to pose babies safely. Newborn photography is a special skill and it’s essential to know how to handle little ones in their first days of life. It’s important for parents-to-be in Louisville to see that you not only create beautiful portraits, but that you are a responsible newborn photographer and take their babies’ care seriously. Great post!ReplyCancel

Blustery cold wintery days like today have me thinking back on how much fun Summer is and all the fun things that are to come in the months ahead.  Strolling down memory lane today has me reminiscing on how much I love being a Louisville KY Newborn Photographer and the twins outdoor newborn session that I shot several months ago of the adorable boy / girl twins, Ari and Olivia.  I love outdoor newborn sessions for a couple of reasons.  First, you don’t have to constantly worry if the baby is warm enough; I only shoot these sessions when it’s 82° and warmer.  Second, I have several different vignettes to stage my shots with at gorgeous locations around town that I have previously scouted out.  Last, but certainly not least, if you shoot late enough in the day then you’re sure to catch some gorgeous sunsets!  Here a just a handful of my favorites when scrolling back through their session this afternoon.  At the bottom of the post, be sure to read up on some helpful tips for shooting outdoors!

Meet Ari, I just adore how peaceful this little prince is here in this field!

This organic wool mini blanket from Mama Knits is a staple in my outdoor sessions.  I love all the beautiful tones in it that pull from nature.

Louisville KY Newborn Photographer | Jennifer Rittenberry Photography | www.jlritt.com

His sister, Olivia, was just as peacefully asleep as he was and enjoying a light summer breeze during her setup.

Louisville KY Newborn Photographer | Jennifer Rittenberry Photography | www.jlritt.com

Dreamy golden mini blanket from Tanya’s Tangles matched perfectly to the sunflower tieback that I found at Sixpence & Sage.  Both, paired with the surroundings and the olive toned bucket, made for a beautiful setup.

A good thing about working with twins is, you can always work whichever one is done eating first or is settled the most.  Olivia was in a good deep sleep by this time and slept like an angel for me while her bubby was grabbing a snack!  As you can see below, I love organic, natural, wispy looking setups when outdoors.

I saved my favorite for last.  Brother and Sister all snuggled up together.  They slept so well and soothed each other when they were side by side. <3  Tieback is from the 3pc set I got from Snippets, wraps are from Stitches by Sarah  & mini blanket is from Mama Knits.

A few tips for shooting outdoors:

1) Bring  bug spray, generally an OFF Clip-On works well and it won’t rub off on baby.

2) Don’t forget to take all of your makeup off before the session! It melts in humid temps and *really* stings when it gets into your eyes.

3) I like shooting in open shade, but if you can’t find shade, bring something to make your own!

4) If it’s TOO HOT for YOU, then it’s definitely TOO HOT for BABY!  Keep in mind that temp needs to be *at least* 82°F in order to have a successful outdoor session (unless you plan to tote a heater around the whole time on top of the mountain of props you brought with you).

5) If you take one piece of advise from me today, do yourself a favor and buy a collapsible wagon to drag all of your props around!  I learned this one the hard way!

6) If you struggle with angles, how to pose baby safely or working with newborns in general, please check out my fabulous mentor, Rachel Vanoven.  She offers wonderful teaching / guidance.  I highly recommend both of her In-Person and Online workshops!
